Why there’s no hall effect low profile keyboard?
October 2024 Update: Gateron has released their first two low profile Hall Effect switches and for now it’s only available in NuPhy Air60 HE keyboard which is now available for purchase with Gateron Jade and Jade Pro low profile switches.
NuPhy makes a lot of low profile keyboards and has released recently Field75 HE.
Unfortunately for now there’s no keyboard on the market that has Hall Effect switches and Rapid Trigger feature and is truly low profile keyboard at the same time. You can put low profile keycaps on such keyboard if it’s compatible, but it won’t help, because Hall Effect switches are just big.
Hall Effect switches rely on a magnet and a sensor to detect key presses. Implementing this sensing mechanism in a very low-profile design presents challenges in terms of:
- PCB design: The sensor and magnet need enough physical space to operate accurately. This can increase the overall height of the switch and PCB.
- Cost: Hall Effect switches are typically more expensive to manufacture than standard mechanical switches due to the additional components involved.
